In the run up to the 2 major events that the GCC region would have to share in the future with the world, all countries are steadily developing buildings, infrastructure and all related equipment, i.e. 5 bigger than the rest hotel projects that could come handy for the 2020 World Exhibition of Dubai and the 2022 World Cup in Doha. This is despite the persisting low price of oil and gas and / or the doubting of any re-balancing of production of these.
Building of notably towers of above 200 meters, as reported in our previous article The Construction of Tall Buildings Industry in the GCC was kept level in 2016 with that of the year before that. No notable towers of greater height though were to be produced last year. Bigger than the Rest: The 5 Biggest Hotel Projects Currently Under Development

In the global hospitality industry, new hotel construction projects are inherently commonplace, as the market is always evolving, changing, and growing in new directions. What’s significantly less common, however, is the frequency with which developers undertake massive projects designed to create more than 5,000 new rooms once completed.
While there are a few such projects currently under development, five of them stand out as more notable than the rest. Let’s take a look at the top 5 massive hotel projects that are currently under development. All information was taken from TOPHOTELPROJECTS database.
Dubrovnik Pearl:
Let’s start with the smallest of the group: Pearl Hotels is adding 5.000 rooms to the city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. This construction is the first phase of an endeavor known as the Croatian Dream Project, which is fitting, because the list of amenities it stands to feature sound like something plucked from a luxurious dream. This project will feature a total of seven hotels, all of which are new constructions. This undertaking will also boast a mega yacht marina with 400 berths, a business airport, a 27-hole golf course with adjacent private villas, condos, 85 high-end boutiques, art galleries, museums, restaurants, coffee shops, discos, an arboretum, a multifunction arena for major shows, a sports area, a seaside promenade that extends to six kilometers, a technology park, vineyards, olive groves, lavender fields, eco parks, and a movie studio. Truly impressive.
COST: $533 million
OPENING DATE: 2020
HOLIDAY INN Makkah Abraaj Al Tayseer:
Although not as costly as the Dubrovnik Pearl Hotels, the next entry on our list will feature slightly more rooms once completed, with a total of 5.154 rooms. Located in the Makkah province of Saudi Arabia, this HOLIDAY INN will spread across five towers, built on the site of the Abraaj Al Tayseer pilgrim accommodation. It will be located only 900 meters from the Grand Mosque, and each tower will have a large restaurant. The construction will be completed in phases, with 1.642 rooms across two towers making up phase one, which will be open to guests year round. The other 3.512 rooms will be spread across three other towers, and they will open later and operate only during Ramadan and the Haj pilgrimage.
COST: $385 million
OPENING DATE: 2018
Bawadi Project:
The Bawadi Project is slated to bring 60.00 new rooms to Dubai. Although the cost and the opening date have become vague, the final vision remains impressive: located in close proximity to Arabian Ranches, it will be the longest chain of luxury hotels in the world, spread over a 10-kilometer stretch and will include 51 luxury hotels.
Boasting 7.500 rooms across eight luxury hotels, this resort in Australia will be truly special, also featuring an artificial lake and island within the site, a casino, an aquarium, a theater, a reef lagoon, an 18-hole golf course, and a convention center. Later construction phases are slated to bring 3 more hotels and a second casino.
OPENING DATE: Q1 2019
Abraj Kudai Towers:
This hotel is also located in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. By far the largest site on our list, this hotel will feature 10.000 rooms and a site area of approximately 60.000 square meters, as well as a total built-up area of about 1.4 million square meters. There will be twelve towers with a bus station, shopping mall, restaurants, food courts, a convention center and car parks.
