Saudi Youth Reimagine the Circular Economy Trends

Through UNDP’s Summer Academy, young Saudi innovators are turning environmental challenges into practical solutions for textile and electronic waste.

What if the same delivery network that brings a new piece of clothing to your doorstep could take an unwanted one away? And what if disposing of an old electronic device could be as simple as scanning a barcode and connecting it to the right recovery channel?

These were among the ideas presented by young Saudi innovators during a Youth Innovation Showcase held at the UN House in Riyadh on 21 July 2026 as part of the UNDP Summer Academy Training Programme, implemented in partnership with the Saudi Youth Society.

The session brought together young participants with representatives and experts from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). More than a presentation of winning projects, the gathering created a space for young people to test their ideas, receive technical feedback and explore how innovative concepts can respond to real sustainability challenges in Saudi Arabia.

Turning fast fashion waste into opportunity
The first-place team tackled a challenge increasingly familiar around the world: fast fashion waste.
Rather than proposing an entirely new collection infrastructure, the team started with a simple observation: convenience shapes consumer behaviour. Their solution therefore builds on systems people already use e-commerce and delivery networks.

Under the proposed model, customers receiving online purchases could hand unwanted clothing to the same delivery driver. The collected garments would then move through existing logistics networks before being sorted by charitable organizations. Clothes that remain wearable could be redistributed, while damaged textiles could enter recycling streams and potentially be transformed into new materials, including thermal and acoustic insulation for the construction sector.

The idea reflects a central principle of the circular economy: what is considered waste can become a resource.

By extending the life of garments and finding new uses for textiles that can no longer be worn, the proposed solution could help reduce landfill waste while opening opportunities for partnerships, recycling activities and job creation. Importantly, the team looked at how existing private-sector infrastructure could help make such a system scalable.

Rethinking the journey of electronic waste
The second-place team turned its attention to electronic waste, presenting a national roadmap supported by a digital platform connecting consumers, recyclers, private-sector partners and government institutions.

Their proposal was structured around six pillars: policy implementation, collection infrastructure, digital innovation, public awareness, recycling capacity and data management.

At the centre of the concept is a system through which electronic devices could be registered, assessed and directed towards the most appropriate recovery pathway. Working devices could be refurbished and resold; usable components could be recovered; and materials such as copper, aluminium and plastics could be sent to certified recycling facilities. During the presentation, the team demonstrated the digital concept through a live barcode scan with the audience.

Rather than proposing immediate nationwide implementation, the team envisioned a phased approach beginning with a pilot in Riyadh and subsequently expanding across the Kingdom. The roadmap also drew on international practices, including Extended Producer Responsibility and formal collection networks.

Learning beyond the classroom
The showcase was also an opportunity to put the lessons of the Summer Academy into practice.
During the programme, participants developed skills that helped them strengthen their proposals, from building a clear theory of change and examining international benchmarks to considering financial sustainability and potential risks. The resulting presentations demonstrated how structured learning can help young people move from identifying a development challenge to designing a potential response.

Following the presentations, UN experts and environmental specialists challenged the participants to look beyond conventional approaches to waste management.

The discussion explored questions of product design and repairability, producer responsibility, manufacturing practices and consumer behaviour. Participants were encouraged to think of waste not simply as something to be disposed of, but as material whose value can remain within the economy for as long as possible. Experts also highlighted the role of education and environmental awareness in encouraging more sustainable lifestyles from an early age.

This exchange reflected a broader purpose of the Summer Academy:
giving young people opportunities not only to learn about sustainable development, but also to engage directly with practitioners and specialists working on these challenges.

Young people as partners in sustainable development
Both winning projects were rooted in different waste streams, but they shared a common idea: environmental challenges can become opportunities for innovation when young people are given the space, knowledge and connections to develop their ideas.

Their proposals also demonstrated links to the Sustainable Development Goals, circular economy principles and the ambitions of Saudi Vision 2030, according to the programme report.

The participation of UNDP, UNEP and the Resident Coordinator Office further brought together expertise spanning sustainable development, environmental management, partnerships and UN coordination, allowing the young innovators to examine their proposals from different perspectives.

The next challenge is to continue that journey, refining promising ideas, building partnerships and exploring opportunities for pilots and implementation.

Because youth engagement is not only about giving young people a voice. It is also about creating the conditions for their ideas to be heard, challenged, strengthened and, where possible, transformed into solutions.

In Riyadh, two teams offered a glimpse of what that can look like: young people looking at what others might call waste and seeing, instead, possibility.
